Kenneth from Nairobi
This is the story of Kenneth from Nairobi, one of our customers. No matter where in the world you may be, when you need Bupa, we are there for you.
1. Thank you, Bupa Latin America and the Caribbean
This is the third time in six months that I start this letter. It hasn’t been easy, but this time I’m determined to send it.
It’s been seven months since my daughter
Nina left the hospital after an 87-day stay,
77 of those in the ICU. I’d like to tell you
her story as concisely as possible, even
though it seemed like an eternity to us.
Nina had had a fever for two days and wasn’t
feeling well. Her pediatrician could not find
anything but a simple virus. When we took
Nina to the hospital, she was already in
septic shock. Her organs were failing. She
was gravely ill, and the doctors struggled
to save her life, again and again during
the following
two and a half months.
During the time Nina was in the ICU, she
underwent peritoneal dialysis, three lung
surgeries and a procedure during which
20% of the upper lobe of her
right lung
was removed. A hemorrhage after brain
surgery affected the left side of her body.
She had a tracheostomy and was
connected to a ventilator.
During her hospital stay, we received
many visits from Leonore on behalf of
Bupa. When one goes through a situation
this diffi cult, you not only suffer
emotionally but you also worry about
the financial implications. That’s when
you really appreciate the advantage of

and big…huge! gestures have been
a blessing to me and my family.
We will soon be traveling to Boston to
take our daughters
to summer camp.
Nina is still having diffi culty walking, but
there are no obstacles that she cannot
overcome. She is ready to run, jump
and swim like her sisters. She still has
trouble moving her left arm and hand,
but she’s ready to take on therapy with
hard work
and dedication.
I don’t know who will read this letter; I
don’t know your names, but I want
you
to know we are forever grateful, and that
you and your families are always
in our prayers.
